Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor to include of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
