An individual profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the close of the month increased in the period preceding President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform in December and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

However these probabilities had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the hallmarks of a bet based on inside information," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
